Why the Cross Is Much More Than a Bumper Sticker

We see the cross on necklaces, church steeples, tattoos, and bumper stickers—but what does it truly represent? Many people may see it merely as a fashion accessory and miss out on its significance. Here are a few reasons why the cross is history’s greatest symbol of love:

The cross reveals God’s humility and generosity

What is God like? During the Greco/Roman era, the mythical gods were known to be difficult to please, temperamental, and even vengeful or jealous (like Zeus or Apollos). The Greek gods were known to flaunt their power and wield it for punishment or their own selfish desires. When Jesus came, He revealed the true definition of God’s nature. Jesus’ humility, meekness, and servant’s heart are not a departure from power, but rather a way to define and demonstrate it. Jesus teaches that greatness comes through serving and laying down one’s life. Instead of retaliating against those who put him to death or trying to defend himself, Jesus generously offered up his life to extend forgiveness to mankind, conquer death, and free us from sin. His death on the cross points us to the Kingdom’s upside-down way of living. It reminds us of Jesus’ words in John 15:13, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

The cross reveals God’s compassion and forgiveness

Why is there suffering in the world? It’s a question people have asked for centuries. We live in a fallen and imperfect world full of humans with free will and phenomena like natural disasters. Although we may not always have an answer to “why” we suffer in various ways—Jesus didn’t ask us to go through anything He didn’t willingly go through Himself. When we look to the cross, we see a God who knows what it means to suffer, experience betrayal, and face death. We see a God who hangs on the cross and responds to His adversaries by saying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34)

When we see our suffering through the lens of the cross, we see that Jesus sees and cares about our suffering, knows it experientially, co-suffers with us, and extends compassion and forgiveness.

The cross reveals God’s love and grace

The cross is a picture of God’s unconditional love for us. He doesn’t ask us to get it together first before He offers His love. Romans 5:8 tells us, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

We cannot earn our salvation—it is a gift from God through Jesus Christ. Because of this truth, the cross is a picture of God's grace—His unmerited favor and kindness. This grace is a demonstration of God's love, as He gives us a free gift we don’t deserve. When we understand God’s great grace and love, we see the most famous Scripture in a new light: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

So, the next time you see an image of a cross, pause and reflect on its great significance. Use it as a moment to remember God’s character of humility, generosity, compassion, forgiveness, and grace. And most importantly—remember the cross = love, and that love is for you.
