What Hope Does Jesus Offer the World?

Where to look when the world seems dark.

Have you ever thought to yourself, “What is this world coming to?” There seems to be no end to the negative headlines. As believers, we need to remind ourselves of the significance of Jesus’ words, especially when the world seems dark.

Corrie Ten Boom says, “If you look at the world, you'll be distressed. If you look within, you'll be depressed. If you look at God, you'll be at rest.”

Let’s focus on what Jesus promised us in John chapter 10 and find rest for our souls:

1. Jesus is Our Salvation

“I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture.” John 10:9

What does it mean when Jesus says He is the gate? Jesus wanted to communicate that He is the gate of salvation—meaning “rescued from our sins.” If you find yourself troubled by the darkness in our world, remember that God sent a rescuer. He is our salvation and our entrance to finding true life, and the invitation is for everyone. He is the gate. The gate is a person.

2. Jesus is Our Security

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” John 10:10-11

The purpose of the type of gate Jesus was referring to was to protect the flock of sheep from predators. The shepherd’s job was to feed, care for, and guide the sheep. In these verses, Jesus offers protection, provision, and guidance. He knows we live in a world where there is a spiritual battle (Ephesians 6:12), and He wants us to know that He is our protector.

3. Jesus is Our Satisfaction

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” Psalm 23:1

Most people aren’t content. The popular Rolling Stones song seems to be the world’s motto: “I can’t get no satisfaction.” But when the Lord is your shepherd, you won’t be unfulfilled or operate from a place of scarcity. You will experience satisfaction in your soul. When Jesus referred to Himself as the shepherd, He knew the significance of David’s words, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” Jesus is telling us that if we are searching for more to life, He’s it. He is your gate to satisfaction.

When the world seems dark, remember what Pastor Todd says, “Wherever there is a shadow, there is always light. Focus on the light.”
