Why the Blood of Jesus Still Matters Today

An element of our faith that never goes out of style.

Do you ever hear about the blood of Jesus in church and wonder…what does that mean? How does Jesus’ blood pertain to our lives today—and why, as Christians, are we still talking about it?

When we sin, we ask God for forgiveness—and, at times, confess or apologize to someone. But, the ancient Jews handled the forgiveness of sin differently. In the Old Testament (before the arrival of Jesus), Jewish priests made a yearly offering of the blood of animals on the altar of the temple to atone (make amends) for the sins of the people (see Hebrews 9:22). This was a foreshadowing of Jesus’ “once for all” willing sacrifice on the cross (Hebrews 7:27).

On the night before Jesus went to the cross, He offered a cup of wine to the disciples and said, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you” (Luke 22:20). The pouring of the cup of wine symbolized the blood of Jesus poured out for all who believe in Him. Jesus' death on the cross offered forgiveness to all and eradicated the old system of animal sacrifice. This is why the blood of Jesus isn’t ordinary—His blood represents our forgiveness, our redemption, and our new life!

Below are more Scriptures explaining the many benefits of the blood of Jesus and why it’s still worth talking about today.
